Recognising and managing your own risk:
PETT provides factual information, and real life tips and experiences about Parkinson’s and table tennis.
We do not give advice on, for example, ‘the best way’ to set up a group. There are many ways to do things. We want to share members’ experiences on what has worked for them, so that we can all learn.
While PETT believes strongly in the benefits of table tennis for people living with Parkinson’s, we recognise that not everyone will enjoy playing table tennis. We urge everybody with Parkinson’s to find and to take part regularly in exercise that you do enjoy. If you are concerned about a risk of falling, or other Parkinson’s related problems, while playing tennis, we recommend that you discuss your concerns with the organiser(s) of the session and/or your GP or neurology professional. It is your choice whether to play table tennis. We do not give medical advice.
Please also visit PETT’s partnership organisations, Parkinson’s UK and Table Tennis England, for more information:

We are gathering tips on what works, and perhaps what doesn’t, in setting up and running a Parkinson’s table tennis group, using real life examples. There may not be a ‘best’ way – there are many ways to do things. Please share your top tips, either on one of the topics listed below, or on a new topic.

Case study – Leeds ParkyPING!
Identifying local need?
We did simple ‘market research’ using an online survey, sent to everyone on the local Parkinson’s UK group list. It was enough to decide that people would come, with useful info about times, days and location. We also went and talked to people at the group.

Charges for sessions?
We decided early on that it’s good to charge something even if we managed to get funding. It will make it sustainable for longer, but we did not want to put anyone off by price. We went for Pay As You Feel (PAYF), despite some advice against. I thought it might last three weeks. But three YEARS on and we’ve taken in as much as we would have by using a set charge. People can genuinely put in to a bucket whatever they choose – I won’t know. They now have a choice of using bank transfer, but it’s still PAYF.

We’re keen to add to this page and to create a full “resources” bank of “how to” guides and welcome assistance in learning from all the successful groups around the country. Please contact us if you can help.
See the where to play page for more information about existing groups.
